Olanzapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that danshen tincture and various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP1A2. However, this activity has not been shown in humans when theophylline, a CYP1A2 substrate, was used as a target drug.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to break down olanzapine (Zyprexa) and clear it out. In lab and test-tube studies, Danshen appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in a real person, olanzapine could build up a bit more than usual, which might mean stronger effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, weight gain, or feeling sluggish.

The reassuring part: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab work, and when researchers tested Danshen against a similar CYP1A2 drug in actual people, they didn't see a real change. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since olanzapine affects your mood and thinking, please run any Danshen product by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Olanzapine

What Is Olanzapine Used For?

Brand name: Zyprexa

Olanzapine treats schizophrenia and the manic or mixed episodes of bipolar I disorder in both adults and adolescents (ages 13–17). It can also be used alongside valproate or lithium to treat manic or mixed episodes in adults. When combined with fluoxetine, olanzapine tablets and orally disintegrating tablets are used to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder and treatment-resistant depression in adults.

Olanzapine intramuscular injection (short-acting) is used by healthcare providers to quickly calm acute agitation in adults with schizophrenia or bipolar I mania. Zyprexa Relprevv — a separate, long-acting intramuscular formulation available only through a restricted program — is indicated specifically for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults.
