Why this applies to Gliclazide

Gliclazide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for gliclazide, your sulfonylurea diabetes pill. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear it from your body. Lab studies suggest Danshen may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happens, gliclazide could hang around longer and work a little harder than expected.

For a blood sugar medicine, the thing to watch is low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can show up as shakiness, sweating, dizziness, hunger, or confusion. The good news: so far this is only a theoretical concern seen in test tubes, not something reported in real people, so I wouldn't panic. Still, please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and keep an eye on your glucose readings.
