Theoretically, taking danshen with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that danshen can produce dose-dependent hypotensive effects. Furthermore, concomitant use with captopril appears to potentiate this effect.

Here's the simple version: Valsartan (Diovan) already lowers your blood pressure by relaxing your blood vessels. Danshen, in animal studies, also appears to bring blood pressure down on its own. So when you put the two together, the worry is that your pressure could dip lower than intended. That might show up as dizziness, lightheadedness, feeling faint when you stand up, or unusual tiredness.

I want to be honest about the evidence here. This is mostly lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Valsartan isn't a prodrug, so the direction is straightforward: both push blood pressure the same way. If you're thinking about adding Danshen, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on how you feel.

Valsartan also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the idea with Danshen and valsartan: your body partly clears valsartan using a liver enzyme called CYP2C9. In lab dish studies, compounds in Danshen seem to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, valsartan could hang around a bit longer and act a little stronger than expected. For a blood pressure medicine, that mainly shows up as your pressure dropping too low, leaving you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or tired, especially when you stand up quickly.

I want to be honest about how soft this is. The concern comes only from test-tube research, and it has not actually been reported in people taking the two together. Still, since Danshen can also affect blood clotting, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have a weakened heart muscle. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (other brands) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
