Adrafinil is a precursor to the stimulant prescription drug modafinil. Modafinil has been shown to increase diastolic and systolic blood pressure. Retrospective analyses show that patients taking modafinil had a small but increased rate of requiring new antihypertensive drugs or increased use of antihypertensive drugs when compared with placebo.

Here's the gist: Valsartan is a blood pressure medicine that relaxes your blood vessels so your heart doesn't have to work as hard. Adrafinil turns into modafinil in your body, and modafinil is a stimulant that can nudge your blood pressure up a little. So the worry is simple, these two pull in opposite directions. The adrafinil could work against your valsartan and blunt some of its blood-pressure-lowering benefit.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how modafinil behaves, not a well-proven clash with valsartan specifically, so don't panic. Still, if you take adrafinil, it's worth checking your blood pressure at home and mentioning it to your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Here's the gist for valsartan (Diovan): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to help process certain medicines, and valsartan is partly handled by that enzyme. The thinking is that modafinil (which your body makes from adrafinil) may slow this enzyme down a bit. If that happens, valsartan could linger and build up slightly, which might nudge its blood-pressure-lowering effect a little stronger. In real life that could show up as feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or extra tired, especially when you stand up quickly.

I want to be honest, though: this one is theoretical, based on lab studies, not real patient reports. It may never cause you a noticeable problem. Still, since adrafinil is unregulated and tough on the liver, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Valsartan

What Is Valsartan Used For?

Brand names: Diovan, Prexxartan

Valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, heart failure in adults, and to lower the risk of cardiovascular death in adults who have had a heart attack and have reduced heart function. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.

Diovan (valsartan) tablets are approved to treat high blood pressure in children as young as 1 year old. Valsartan tablets (generic) are approved for children 6 years and older. Valsartan oral solution is specifically indicated for patients with heart failure or post-heart attack left ventricular dysfunction who are unable to swallow tablets.
