Why this applies to Glipizide, Metformin

Glipizide, Metformin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Danshen interacts with.

Theoretically, danshen may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that various constituents of danshen inhibit the activity of CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

This combo pill pairs glipizide with metformin. The piece that matters here is the glipizide. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to clear glipizide out of your body. Lab studies suggest Danshen may slow that enzyme down, which could let glipizide build up a bit more than usual.

In practice, that would mean a slightly stronger blood-sugar-lowering effect, so watch for signs of low blood sugar like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling suddenly hungry or confused. I want to be honest though: this is only based on test-tube research, and it has not been reported in real people. So it's a maybe, not a sure thing. If you'd like to add Danshen, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
