Theaflavin and Celiprolol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP)

Why this applies to Celiprolol

Celiprolol falls under ORGANIC ANION-TRANSPORTING POLYPEPTIDE SUBSTRATES (OATP) — the group Theaflavin interacts with.

In vitro, theaflavin inhibits organic anion-transporting polypeptide (OATP)2B1. OATP2B1 is expressed in the small intestine and liver and is responsible for the uptake of drugs and other compounds. This interaction has not been shown in humans. However, theaflavin might reduce the absorption of drugs that are OATP2B1 substrates. Use with caution.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with celiprolol, a beta-blocker often used for blood pressure. Your gut relies on a little transporter called OATP2B1 to soak up celiprolol from the intestine, and in lab studies theaflavin (a black tea compound) seems to slow that transporter down. If less drug gets absorbed, you may get less of celiprolol's effect, so your blood pressure or heart rate might not be as well controlled as expected.

Now, the honest part: this was only seen in test tube and animal work, not in people, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. A regular cup of black tea is unlikely to matter much, while concentrated theaflavin extracts are the bigger question mark. Before adding a supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Celiprolol page

“Someone taking celiprolol (Celicard) for high blood pressure may be the same person pouring apple juice at breakfast, and that ordinary habit is where this list bites. Nine of its 170 ingredients rate major, and those deserve your attention first.”

About Theaflavin

What is Theaflavin?

  • Heart health and cholesterol support
  • Antioxidant support
  • Weight management
  • Blood sugar support
  • General wellness

Theaflavins are antioxidant compounds formed when tea leaves are oxidized to make black tea. Early research suggests they may help with cholesterol and provide antioxidant effects, but high-quality human evidence is limited and doses are not standardized. Drinking black tea is generally safe, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated extracts.
