Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version. Binimetinib (Mektovi) is a pill, and xanthan gum is a thick soluble fiber that forms a gel in your stomach. That gel can slow how fast things leave your stomach, so in theory it might change how much of your binimetinib gets absorbed. I want to be honest with you though: this concern is theoretical, based on how fiber behaves, not on real cases with this specific cancer drug.

The amount of xanthan gum in everyday foods is very unlikely to matter. Larger amounts, like fiber used to thicken liquids, are where I'd be more careful. A safe habit is to take your binimetinib first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any concentrated xanthan gum. Since this is part of melanoma treatment, please run it by your oncology pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

What Is Binimetinib Used For?

Brand name: Mektovi

Mektovi (binimetinib) is used in combination with another medicine called encorafenib. Together, they treat unresectable (cannot be surgically removed) or metastatic (spread to other parts of the body) melanoma in patients whose tumors have a BRAF V600E or V600K mutation, as confirmed by an FDA-approved test.

Mektovi, used with encorafenib, is also approved for adult patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that carries a BRAF V600E mutation, again confirmed by an FDA-approved test. In both cases, testing for the specific mutation is required before starting treatment.
