Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with dabrafenib (Tafinlar) and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your stomach and can slow how fast things move through your gut. In theory, that gel could change how much of an oral pill like dabrafenib gets absorbed. This concern is theoretical and based on how fiber behaves, not on real-world reports, so it's rated as minor.

Still, since dabrafenib is a cancer medicine where steady levels matter, I'd keep them apart. A simple fix is taking xanthan gum about 30 to 60 minutes after your dabrafenib dose. Tiny amounts in food are unlikely to be an issue, but please run any thickener or fiber supplement past your oncology pharmacist or doctor first.

About Dabrafenib

What Is Dabrafenib Used For?

Brand name: Tafinlar

Dabrafenib is used to treat cancers that carry a specific change (mutation) in the BRAF gene — most often called a BRAF V600E or V600K mutation. These mutations cause cancer cells to grow out of control. Before starting this medicine, a tumor test must confirm the mutation is present.

It can be used alone or — more commonly — paired with another targeted drug, trametinib. Conditions it treats include advanced or inoperable melanoma (skin cancer), certain lung cancers, anaplastic thyroid cancer, low-grade brain tumors (glioma) in children, and other solid tumors with the same mutation that haven't responded to prior treatment.
