Dimethyl Fumarate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel in your stomach and slows how fast things empty out. In theory, that gel could grab onto a swallowed pill like Tecfidera (dimethyl fumarate) and slightly change how much, or how fast, your body absorbs it. I want to stress that this is only a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not something proven to cause problems with this MS medicine.

To keep things safe and simple, it's reasonable to take your Tecfidera first and then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum supplement. Tiny food amounts (like a thickened drink or a sauce) are unlikely to matter. If you use xanthan gum for thickening or any medical reason, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Dimethyl Fumarate Used For?

Brand name: Tecfidera

Dimethyl fumarate delayed-release capsules — sold as Tecfidera and under the generic name Dimethyl Fumarate — are used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in adults. This includes clinically isolated syndrome (a first episode of MS-like symptoms), relapsing-remitting MS, and active secondary progressive MS.

These are oral formulations only. The intravesical (bladder) products listed in this ingredient family — Rimso-50 and Dimethyl Sulfoxide — contain a different compound (dimethyl sulfoxide, not dimethyl fumarate) and are used for a different condition; they are not MS treatments.
