Gemtuzumab falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's some good news right off the bat: the interaction we have on file is about xanthan gum slowing how the gut absorbs oral (swallowed) medicines. Gemtuzumab (Mylotarg) doesn't fit that picture. It's given as an infusion straight into a vein at an infusion center, so it never passes through your stomach or intestines. That means a soluble fiber sitting in your gut has no realistic way to change how much of this drug reaches your bloodstream.

This note is also only a theoretical concern based on pharmacology, not on real-world cases. So for Mylotarg specifically, the timing tip about taking fiber an hour after pills simply doesn't apply. Still, since you're going through cancer treatment, it's always smart to run any supplement, including xanthan gum, past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

What Is Gemtuzumab Ozogamicin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Mylotarg

Mylotarg (gemtuzumab ozogamicin) is used to treat CD33-positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML) — a fast-moving cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It is approved for adults and children as young as 1 month old when AML is newly diagnosed, and for adults and children 2 years and older when AML has relapsed (come back) or is refractory (no longer responding to treatment).

Depending on the situation, Mylotarg may be given alone or in combination with other chemotherapy drugs such as daunorubicin and cytarabine. Your care team will determine which approach fits your specific diagnosis.
