Iothalamate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the situation with iothalamate (Conray). This is a contrast agent, a dye used during imaging tests like X-rays and scans to help your doctor see blood vessels and the urinary tract. It is not a pill you take every day, and most of the time it's given by injection. The xanthan gum concern on file applies to oral medications, where this thick fiber gel can slow stomach emptying and slightly change how much of a drug is absorbed.

The good news: this is only a theoretical, minor concern based on pharmacology, not real-world reports. If you ever take an oral form, spacing the xanthan gum 30 to 60 minutes after your dose easily sidesteps it. Food-level amounts almost certainly don't matter. When in doubt, check with the team doing your imaging.
