Ketoprofen falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach. That gel can slow how fast things empty out of your stomach, and in theory it could slow down how quickly your ketoprofen capsule gets absorbed. Ketoprofen is an NSAID, not a prodrug, so it works as-is once it's absorbed. A slower absorption might mean your pain or fever relief takes a little longer to kick in, rather than making the drug stronger.

This is a theoretical, minor concern based on how fiber behaves, not strong patient evidence. To stay on the safe side, an easy fix is to take your ketoprofen first and wait 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum supplement. If you use it as a liquid thickener for swallowing, check with your pharmacist about timing.

What Is Ketoprofen Used For?

Brand names: Orudis, Oruvail Gel, Powergel, Oruvail Injection

Ketoprofen capsules (including the brand Orudis) are used to manage the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, to treat pain, and to treat primary dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual periods).

Ketoprofen extended-release capsules are approved for rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis only. Because of the way they slowly release the drug, ketoprofen extended-release capsules are not recommended for treating acute (sudden) pain.
