ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Lanthanum Carbonate
Lanthanum Carbonate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with lanthanum carbonate (Fosrenol): it isn't a pill that needs to get absorbed to work. It does its job right inside your gut, grabbing onto the phosphorus from your food so it doesn't get into your blood. So it's a little different from most medications.
The concern here is mostly theoretical. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that forms a gel and slows how things move through your stomach. In a worst case, that gel could get in the way of lanthanum mixing with your food properly, which might make it bind phosphate a bit less well. To keep things simple, a good habit is taking xanthan gum about 30 to 60 minutes after your lanthanum. If you're using either one regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Xanthan gum is a fermentation-made fiber widely used to thicken and stabilize foods and to thicken liquids for people with swallowing difficulties. About Lanthanum
What Is Lanthanum Used For?
Brand name: Fosrenol
Lanthanum carbonate — available as lanthanum carbonate chewable tablets and as Fosrenol in both chewable tablet and oral powder forms — is used to lower elevated serum phosphate (too much phosphate in the blood) in people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the most advanced stage of chronic kidney disease.
Managing high phosphate in ESRD typically involves eating less phosphate-rich food, removing phosphate through dialysis, and using a phosphate binder like lanthanum carbonate to reduce how much phosphate is absorbed from meals.
