Lenalidomide falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with Revlimid (lenalidomide) and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your gut and can slow how fast your stomach empties. The worry, and it's only a theoretical one based on how fiber behaves, is that this gel could change how much of your lenalidomide gets absorbed if you swallow them at the same time.

This isn't a dangerous chemical clash, and food-level amounts of xanthan gum (like in salad dressing or gluten-free baking) are unlikely to matter. With a cancer medicine like this, though, you want steady, predictable absorption. A simple fix is spacing: take your lenalidomide first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any concentrated xanthan gum. Run your routine by your pharmacist or oncologist to be safe.

About Lenalidomide

What Is Lenalidomide Used For?

Brand name: Revlimid

Lenalidomide capsules (brand names Revlimid and Lenalidomide) are used to treat several blood cancers and related conditions in adults. These include multiple myeloma (MM) — both in combination with dexamethasone and as maintenance therapy after a stem cell transplant — and transfusion-dependent anemia caused by low- or intermediate-1-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) linked to a specific chromosome change called deletion 5q.

Lenalidomide capsules are also used for mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) that has come back or stopped responding after at least two prior treatments (one of which included bortezomib). In combination with a rituximab product, they treat previously treated follicular lymphoma (FL) and previously treated marginal zone lymphoma (MZL). Lenalidomide is not approved for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) outside of clinical trials.
