Xanthan Gum and Memantine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

ORAL DRUGS

Why this applies to Memantine

Memantine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with memantine and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach and gut. That gel can slow how fast things move through, and in theory it might slow down how quickly a swallowed pill like memantine gets absorbed. Memantine works as is (it isn't a prodrug that needs activating), so this isn't about making it stronger, just possibly changing the timing or amount your body takes in.

The good news: this is a theoretical, minor concern based on how fiber behaves, not on real cases of memantine failing. To keep it simple, take your memantine first and wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum supplement. Food amounts are unlikely to matter. If you use thickened liquids daily, just check with your pharmacist.
