Oseltamivir Phosphate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Xanthan Gum interacts with.

Theoretically, xanthan gum can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber qualities. Xanthan gum slows gastric emptying and has been used to control the release of drugs in tablet formulations. To avoid any alterations in drug absorption, xanthan gum should be taken 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the basic idea with Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a thick gel in your stomach and slows how fast things empty into the intestines. In theory, that gel could slow down how quickly your body absorbs an oral dose of Tamiflu. This is a theoretical concern only, based on how fiber behaves, not on real cases of it causing problems.

To play it safe, a simple gap usually does the trick: take your Tamiflu first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before having concentrated xanthan gum. Small amounts in everyday foods are very unlikely to matter. If you use xanthan gum to thicken liquids for swallowing, just check with your pharmacist so your flu treatment stays on track.

What Is Oseltamivir Used For?

Brand name: Tamiflu

Oseltamivir is used to treat acute, uncomplicated influenza A and B in patients 2 weeks of age and older who have had symptoms for no more than 48 hours. It is also used to prevent (prophylaxis) influenza A and B in patients 1 year of age and older.

Keep in mind: oseltamivir is not a substitute for your annual flu vaccine. It does not work against bacterial infections or illnesses caused by anything other than influenza viruses.
