Here's the gist with thioridazine (Mellaril) and xanthan gum. Because xanthan gum is a soluble fiber that turns into a gel and slows how fast your stomach empties, it could in theory change how much of your thioridazine dose your body soaks up. This isn't a proven problem, though. It's a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, and the interaction is rated as minor.

With thioridazine, you'd mainly want steady, predictable absorption, since too little could leave symptoms undertreated and too much could add to drowsiness, dizziness, or a fast heartbeat. A simple fix is timing: take your thioridazine first, then wait about 30 to 60 minutes before any xanthan gum. If you use it daily, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Thioridazine Used For?

Brand name: Mellaril

Thioridazine Hydrochloride tablets are used for the management of schizophrenia — but only in patients who have already tried at least two other antipsychotic medications without adequate results, either because those drugs didn't work well enough or caused intolerable side effects.

Because thioridazine carries serious heart-rhythm risks, it is considered a last-resort option for schizophrenia, not a first-line treatment. It is not approved for dementia-related psychosis or any other psychiatric condition.
