Polydextrose: Uses, Safety & Side Effects
Polydextrose is a man-made soluble fiber used widely in foods as a low-calorie bulking agent and prebiotic. It is generally well tolerated, though large amounts can cause gas, bloating, or loose stools. It is not a medicine and should not replace a balanced, fiber-rich diet.

Overview
Polydextrose is a man-made (synthetic) type of soluble fiber. It is not an herb or plant, but a carbohydrate built in the lab from glucose (a simple sugar), with small amounts of sorbitol and citric acid. The result is a tasteless, slightly sweet powder that food makers use widely.
Because polydextrose acts as a fiber and provides very few calories, it is often added to low-calorie or low-sugar foods. You may find it in baked goods, candies, frozen desserts, drinks, and some fiber supplements. It helps add bulk and texture while replacing some of the sugar or fat in a product.
People mainly take in polydextrose through processed foods, but it is also sold as a fiber additive. It is considered a soluble, fermentable fiber, which means gut bacteria can break it down.
How it works
Polydextrose is a soluble fiber, so the human gut cannot fully digest it. Instead, it passes to the large intestine, where bacteria ferment (break down) part of it.
This fermentation can produce short-chain fatty acids, which may help nourish the cells lining the colon and support a healthier balance of gut bacteria. This is the basis for calling it a prebiotic.
As a fiber, it also holds water and adds bulk to stool, which can help with regularity. Because the body absorbs little of it for energy, it provides far fewer calories than sugar, which is why it is used as a low-calorie ingredient. Much of this understanding comes from lab studies and food-science research.

Safety & precautions
Polydextrose has a long history of use in foods and is widely considered safe by food-safety authorities. Most people tolerate normal food amounts well.
The main concern is digestive upset when large amounts are eaten at once, since fermentable fibers can cause gas and bloating. People with sensitive digestion, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), or conditions that worsen with fermentable carbohydrates (FODMAPs) may notice more discomfort.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the amounts found in everyday foods are likely fine, but there is little research on high supplement-level doses. To be safe, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using concentrated fiber supplements during these times.
If you have any chronic gut condition, check with a healthcare provider before adding large amounts of any fiber.
Side effects
The most common side effects come from eating a lot of polydextrose at once. These can include:
- Gas and bloating
- Stomach cramps or discomfort
- Loose stools or a laxative effect
These effects are usually mild and tend to go away as your body adjusts or when you lower the amount. Starting with small amounts and increasing slowly can help. Serious side effects are uncommon. If you have ongoing or severe digestive symptoms, stop using it and speak with a healthcare provider.
Polydextrose: Reported Adverse Effects

Orally, polydextrose seems to be well tolerated when used in doses of less than 50 grams.
Most Common Adverse Effects:
Orally: Bloating, diarrhea, gas.
Constipation Gastrointestinal
Orally, polydextrose may cause gas, bloating, and loose stools. These adverse effects are more common when single doses of more than 50 grams or daily doses of more than 90 grams are used. Higher doses of polydextrose (90 grams/day or more) may also cause transient diarrhea in some people. Giving a formula supplemented with 4 grams/L of polydextrose and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) (1:1 ratio) to infants has been associated with an increased incidence of gastrointestinal adverse effects, primarily constipation and diarrhea, in one clinical study. However, it is unclear if this was due to polydextrose, GOS, or the combination.

Dermatitis Dermatologic
Orally, giving a formula supplemented with 4 grams/L of polydextrose and galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS) (1:1 ratio) to infants has been associated with an increased incidence of atopic dermatitis in one clinical study. However, it is unclear if this was due to polydextrose, GOS, or the combination.
Vertigo Neurologic/CNS
Orally, one participant in one clinical study complained of transient dizziness after eating yogurt containing polydextrose 12.5 grams.

Dosing
There is no official medicinal dose for polydextrose, since it is mainly used as a food ingredient rather than a medicine. The amount you get depends on the foods or supplements you choose.
If you use a product that contains polydextrose, follow the directions on the label. As with any fiber, it is best to start with a small amount and increase gradually while drinking plenty of water. This lowers the chance of gas, bloating, or loose stools.
