Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), a naturally occurring compound your body uses to make serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood, sleep, and pain processing. The remaining ingredients — dicalcium phosphate, gelatin, silica, vegetable cellulose, and vegetable magnesium stearate — are inactive excipients that form and stabilize the capsule.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: mood and appetite regulation with serotonin support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Anxiety, Depression, Fibromyalgia, Insomnia, Migraine headache, Obesity — and 2 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: 5-htp is rated "Possibly Effective" for Depression (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: 5-htp is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Anxiety, Migraine headache, Fibromyalgia, Insomnia, and more.

5-HTP is rated possibly effective for depression based on available evidence. For other conditions in the data we hold — including down syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, panic disorder, and cerebellar ataxia — the evidence is either insufficient to rate or suggests it may not be effective.

If you're considering this for a specific condition, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about whether the evidence supports its use for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Orally, 5-HTP is generally well tolerated in the short term, though it does cause side effects in some people. The most common ones are abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dizziness, diarrhea, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, trouble sleeping, nausea, and vomiting — and these tend to be dose-dependent.

Rare but serious effects include aggression, hallucinations, and mania. Gastrointestinal upset may improve with continued use in some people, though severity can also depend on how quickly the dose is increased.

The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient information.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — 5-htp.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: Parkinson's medications.
  • For scale: 398 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking 5-HTP, double-check with your pharmacist if you take any serotonergic drugs (antidepressants like SSRIs, SNRIs, and tricyclics; migraine or pain medications; and others that affect serotonin), sedating medications (sleep aids, antihistamines, opioids), or carbidopa for Parkinson's disease. These carry Moderate interaction risks.

Carbidopa (Lodosyn)

Combining 5-HTP and carbidopa can increase the risk of serotonergic side effects.
Carbidopa is sometimes used with 5-HTP to minimize peripheral 5-HTP metabolism and boost the amount that reaches the brain. However, this combination might also increase the risk of some side effects including hypomania, restlessness, rapid speech, anxiety, insomnia, and aggressiveness. Combining carbidopa and 5-HTP might also increase the risk of scleroderma-like skin changes due to elevated serotonin levels.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cns Depressants

Theoretically, concomitant use of 5-HTP with medications that cause sedation might have additive effects.
In clinical trials, 5-HTP has been associated with drowsiness and somnolence.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Serotonergic Drugs

Combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might cause additive serotonergic effects.
5-HTP can increase serotonin levels and cause serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with 5-HTP might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. However, serotonin syndrome with 5-HTP has not yet been reported in humans. Monitor patients for signs of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects if using 5-HTP with serotonergic drugs.

5-HTP 100 by Wonder Laboratories: Common Questions

Does 5-HTP 100 by Wonder Laboratories interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, 5-HTP 100 has a known interaction with 398 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
5-HTP 100 contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Will 5-HTP make me drowsy?
Drowsiness is one of the more common side effects reported in studies. If you're also taking a sleep aid or other sedating medication, the drowsiness could be stronger. Start at a low dose and see how you feel, and let your pharmacist know if drowsiness is a problem.
Can I take 5-HTP if I'm on an antidepressant?
Not without checking first. 5-HTP combined with antidepressants (like SSRIs or SNRIs) can raise serotonin levels too high, risking serotonin syndrome. Your pharmacist or doctor needs to know about both before you add this supplement.
What's 5-HTP supposed to do?
5-HTP is the compound your body uses to make serotonin, which helps regulate mood and sleep. It's possibly effective for depression based on available evidence, but the strength of that evidence isn't definitive.
Are there any fillers or other junk in here?
The capsule contains inactive ingredients like dicalcium phosphate, gelatin, silica, cellulose, and magnesium stearate. These are standard binders and stabilizers — not harmful, just there to hold the capsule together.
Is 5-HTP safe to take while pregnant or breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety information, so the data advises against it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your specific situation for personalized guidance.
Can 5-HTP cause mania or aggression?
Yes — mania, hypomania, anxiety, aggressiveness, and even hallucinations are rare but serious side effects that have been reported, especially at high doses or in people with certain mental health conditions. This is another reason to talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting.
