The prebiotics are chicory and Jerusalem artichoke, which feed the beneficial bacteria. The inactive ingredients include rice flour, hypromellose, gellan gum, rice hull extract, gum arabic, and sunflower oil — these are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.

Evidence for these probiotics varies by strain and condition. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. For many other conditions — including allergic rhinitis, anxiety, cognitive decline, asthma, and common cold — the evidence we hold is insufficient to rate these strains.
The prebiotic and other probiotic strains in this formula lack established effectiveness ratings in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The probiotics here are generally well tolerated in healthy people, though those with weakened immune systems should use caution and check with their doctor first. Live probiotic organisms are rare but possible sources of blood infections (bacteremia) in critically ill patients, infants, or those with severely compromised immunity — these cases have been documented but are uncommon.
Mild gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea can occur with probiotics, though these haven't been specifically reported for every strain in this product. Chicory may cause gas and bloating and can trigger allergic reactions in people sensitive to the daisy family (ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds).
For pregnancy, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium longum are rated possibly safe, but chicory is rated possibly unsafe in medicinal amounts — talk with your doctor about whether this product is right for you during pregnancy. Lactation safety data are limited for most ingredients.

Physician's Choice 60 Billion Probiotic contains multiple bacterial strains and plant ingredients, and we found documented interactions with two main medication types.
The most serious concern is with antibiotic drugs — five of the probiotic strains (Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus) may have their effectiveness reduced if taken at the same time as antibiotics, because the antibiotic can kill the live organisms in the product. To protect the probiotic's viability, separate your antibiotic dose from this supplement.

Chicory, a prebiotic ingredient in this product, may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if you're taking diabetes medications, based on animal and lab research showing chicory extracts have blood-sugar-lowering effects.
Additionally, gum arabic (an inactive ingredient used as a binder) can reduce how well your body absorbs certain oral antibiotics, particularly amoxicillin. A small study showed concurrent use significantly lowers amoxicillin absorption, so space them at least 2 hours apart.
Gum arabic may also affect absorption of other oral drugs more broadly due to its fiber content.

A small study in healthy volunteers shows that taking amoxicillin and gum arabic concurrently significantly reduces the absorption of amoxicillin. Separate doses of amoxicillin from gum arabic by at least 2 hours.
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, gum arabic can alter the absorption of oral drugs due to its fiber content.
Gum arabic has been used as a suspending osmotic agent in drug formulations. It might improve bioavailability of water-insoluble drugs like naproxen, but reduce absorption of polar drugs like amoxicillin. To avoid changes in absorption, take gum arabic 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Chicory
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chicory might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal and in vitro research shows that chicory extracts have antidiabetic effects.
