What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-14, a live bacterial culture that acts as a probiotic. The capsule also includes inactive ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, stearic acid, and silicon dioxide — which serve as the capsule material and binders.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for Lactobacillus acidophilus is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
However, it's rated possibly ineffective for atopic disease (allergic conditions), and there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to rate it for acute respiratory distress syndrome.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lactobacillus acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Some people taking it alongside other probiotics have reported mild gastrointestinal side effects — things like stomach discomfort, gas, bloating, diarrhea, or nausea — but these are uncommon.
In rare cases, the live bacteria have been associated with serious infections in people with compromised immune systems, though this is not typical. Talk with your doctor before starting this supplement, especially if you have a weakened immune system.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antibiotic drugs, don't take them at the same time as this product. Space them several hours apart so the antibiotic doesn't kill off the live bacteria in the supplement.
Your pharmacist can help you work out the right timing.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Acidophilus Two Billion is a straightforward single-ingredient probiotic that may help with IBS, antibiotic-related diarrhea, and a few other digestive concerns. The main thing to watch is timing it away from antibiotics.
If you're taking any medications — especially antibiotics — or have a condition that affects your immune system, check with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting.
