Health Plus Prebiotic Formula is a 13-ingredient capsule containing active probiotics and prebiotics plus digestive enzymes. L. acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though live microorganisms do carry a rare theoretical risk of serious infection in certain patients. Inulin, fructooligosaccharides, and arabinogalactan commonly cause gas, bloating, flatulence, and gastrointestinal cramps — especially at higher doses — but are otherwise well tolerated.

Slippery elm is generally well tolerated for short-term use, and burdock is likely safe when used as a food or short-term in healthy adults, though safety data are limited. Phytase may provoke allergic reactions in occupationally exposed people, though oral supplement risk is unclear.

Rare serious adverse effects reported with L. acidophilus include infection in compromised patients; burdock has rare allergic reactions and one case of liver injury (though other ingredients in that product may have been responsible); slippery elm pollen is an allergen and can cause contact dermatitis.

Theoretically, slippery elm may slow the absorption and reduce serum levels of oral drugs.
Slippery elm inner bark contains mucilage, which may interfere with the absorption of orally administered drugs.

Antibiotic Drugs

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, taking burdock with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.

In vitro research shows that lignans from burdock reduce rabbit platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet activating factor. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Immunosuppressants

Theoretically, larch arabinogalactan might interfere with immunosuppression therapy due to immunostimulant effects. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), corticosteroids (glucocorticoids), and other drugs.

Theoretically, inulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia with antidiabetes drugs.
