Here's the gist with Eliquis (apixaban) and slippery elm. Slippery elm forms a slick, gel-like coating in your gut. The concern, and it's only a theoretical one based on how the herb behaves, is that this gel could grab onto a pill taken at the same time and slow or slightly reduce how much apixaban your body absorbs. Apixaban is a blood thinner, so if you absorbed less of it, the worry is weaker clot protection.

This isn't proven in real patients, and apixaban is not a prodrug, so it doesn't need activating. Still, since this medication keeps dangerous clots away, I'd play it safe: separate the two by a few hours and run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Slippery elm is a traditional herbal remedy made from the inner bark of a North American elm tree, used mainly to soothe sore throats and irritated digestive tracts. Its mucilage can coat and calm mucous membranes, but solid human evidence for most uses is limited. It is generally considered low-risk for short-term use, but you should still check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Apixaban

What Is Apixaban Used For?

Brand name: Eliquis

Apixaban is used to reduce the risk of stroke and dangerous clots traveling through the body in adults with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm not caused by a heart valve problem). It is also used to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT — a blood clot in the leg) in adults after hip or knee replacement surgery, and to treat DVT and pulmonary embolism (PE — a blood clot in the lungs) in adults, including reducing the risk of those clots coming back.

Eliquis (the brand-name tablet and kit) is additionally approved to treat venous thromboembolism (VTE — blood clots in the veins) and reduce the risk of recurrent VTE in pediatric patients from birth and older, after at least 5 days of initial anticoagulant treatment. The generic apixaban tablet carries the adult indications only.
