Here's the gist with slippery elm and losartan (Cozaar). Slippery elm forms a thick, sticky gel in your gut, and the thinking is that this gel could coat your stomach and intestines and slow down how much losartan gets absorbed. If less of your blood pressure pill makes it into your system, it may not work as well, which could mean your readings creep back up.

I want to be honest though: this is a theoretical concern based on how the fiber behaves, not something proven in real patients. A simple fix many people use is spacing them out, taking your losartan a few hours apart from the slippery elm. Before you change anything, check the timing with your pharmacist or doctor.

Slippery elm is a traditional herbal remedy made from the inner bark of a North American elm tree, used mainly to soothe sore throats and irritated digestive tracts. Its mucilage can coat and calm mucous membranes, but solid human evidence for most uses is limited. It is generally considered low-risk for short-term use, but you should still check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
