Theoretically, taking burdock with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.

In vitro research shows that lignans from burdock reduce rabbit platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet activating factor. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist with warfarin and burdock. Warfarin is already a powerful blood thinner, and it's a 'narrow window' drug, meaning small shifts can tip you toward too much or too little effect. The concern here is that burdock might add a little extra blood-thinning action of its own, which could nudge you toward more bleeding.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is: it comes from lab work on rabbit platelets, not from people. Nothing like this has actually been reported in humans. Still, because warfarin leaves so little room for error, it's worth a heads-up. Watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or pink urine, and chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a burdock supplement.

What Is Warfarin Used For?

Brand name: Warfarin

Warfarin sodium tablets and Jantoven tablets are both used to prevent and treat venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins) and pulmonary embolism (a clot in the lungs). They are also used to prevent clot-related complications in people with atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart rhythm) or who have had a heart valve replaced.

In people who have had a heart attack, warfarin is used to reduce the risk of death, another heart attack, stroke, or other clotting events. It does not dissolve an existing clot, but it helps prevent the clot from growing and stops new dangerous clots from forming.
