Nintedanib Esylate falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Burdock interacts with.

Theoretically, taking burdock with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs might increase the risk of bleeding.

In vitro research shows that lignans from burdock reduce rabbit platelet aggregation by inhibiting platelet activating factor. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the connection worth knowing about. Nintedanib (Ofev) can already raise your bleeding risk a bit on its own, which is why your doctor watches for things like nosebleeds, easy bruising, or bleeding gums. Burdock is being flagged because, in lab dishes, certain compounds from it slowed down platelets (the cells that help your blood clot). Stack those two together and, in theory, you could see a little more bleeding tendency.

But keep this in perspective. This warning comes only from test-tube and animal research, not from real people, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Eating burdock as a vegetable is unlikely to matter much. Concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Before adding a burdock supplement, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on any bleeding signs.

Burdock is a traditional herb most often used for skin problems and as a so-called 'blood purifier,' but high-quality human studies are lacking and most claims are not well proven. It is widely eaten as a vegetable and is generally considered low-risk for short-term use in healthy adults, but it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and by people allergic to ragweed or daisy-family plants.

About Nintedanib

What Is Nintedanib Used For?

Brand name: Ofev

Nintedanib capsules are approved for adults with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) — a chronic, progressive scarring of the lungs — and for adults with chronic fibrosing interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) with a progressive phenotype, meaning fibrosing lung diseases that continue to worsen over time despite treatment.

Nintedanib capsules (including Ofev) are also indicated to slow the rate of decline in lung function in adults with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD), a lung complication of the autoimmune condition systemic sclerosis (scleroderma). Note that the Nintedanib esylate capsule product is approved for IPF and chronic fibrosing ILDs with a progressive phenotype, but SSc-ILD approval is carried by Ofev and other nintedanib capsule products — always confirm with your prescriber which product you have been prescribed.
