What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Advanced 40+ Acidophilus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Advanced 40+ Acidophilus by Solgar
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains five active probiotic strains: L. acidophilus LA-5, L. rhamnosus GG, L. paracasei, B. lactis, and S. thermophilus. These are live beneficial bacteria meant to support digestive and gut health.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, and vegetable magnesium stearate — which are standard binders and fillers.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L. acidophilus LA-5 is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), antibiotic-associated diarrhea, bacterial vaginosis, and Helicobacter pylori infection. The evidence isn't strong enough to call it definitely effective, but the data do suggest benefit in these areas.
For the other strains in this blend, we either lack effectiveness data or have insufficient evidence to rate them. S. thermophilus, for instance, has been studied for several conditions — antibiotic-associated diarrhea, bacterial vaginosis, constipation, diabetes — but the evidence isn't established enough to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L. acidophilus is generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. Gastrointestinal side effects — such as belly discomfort, bloating, gas, diarrhea, or nausea — can occur when taking probiotics, though these are uncommon.
In rare cases, live probiotic organisms have been linked to serious infections (like bloodstream infections or sepsis), but this has almost always happened in people with weakened immune systems or serious illness. If you have a weakened immune system or are critically ill, talk with your doctor before starting.
S. thermophilus also carries a similar theoretical concern in immunocompromised patients. Data on probiotic supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding are limited; food-based probiotics are generally considered acceptable, but ask your healthcare provider before taking a supplement.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
The main thing to double-check is antibiotic drugs. Taking them at the same time as this product may reduce how well the probiotics work.
Separate the timing with help from your pharmacist or doctor. We couldn't check data for three of the five probiotic strains, so if you're on other medications, use the search tool below to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help with IBS, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, or other gut issues if you're in good health. If you take antibiotics, space out the timing — don't take them together.
People with weakened immune systems should check with their doctor first. Always run your medications through our interaction checker on this page before you start.

Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
