Clarithromycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Acidophilus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction runs in one direction only. Clarithromycin is an antibiotic, so it kills bacteria, and your probiotic is made up of live, friendly bacteria. If you swallow them at the same time, the clarithromycin can wipe out a good chunk of those Lactobacillus organisms before they ever get to work. So it's the probiotic that loses its punch, not your antibiotic.

Your clarithromycin will still treat your infection just fine, so don't worry about that part. This is more of a timing tip than a danger. A simple fix is to space them out by at least two hours. Many people actually find a probiotic helpful for the loose stools antibiotics can cause, so it's worth asking your pharmacist how to time both for the best benefit.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a 'friendly' bacterium used as a probiotic to support gut and vaginal health. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, and there is reasonable evidence it may help with certain types of diarrhea, but proof for many other uses is limited. About Clarithromycin

What Is Clarithromycin Used For?

Brand names: Biaxin, Biaxin XL

Clarithromycin tablets and oral suspension treat a range of mild to moderate bacterial infections in adults and children, including community-acquired pneumonia, acute sinus infections, acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, strep throat and tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin infections, and middle ear infections in children. Tablets are also used in adults to eliminate H. pylori bacteria (in combination with other medicines) to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

Clarithromycin tablets — but not the extended-release tablet — are also used to treat and prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in people with advanced HIV. Clarithromycin extended-release tablets are approved only for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, and community-acquired pneumonia in adults — not for the other conditions listed above.
