Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Ampicillin
Ampicillin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Acidophilus interacts with.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing: ampicillin doesn't become weaker, and neither does your treatment for the infection. The concern actually runs the other direction. Ampicillin kills bacteria, and it can't always tell the difference between the bad bugs causing your infection and the friendly Lactobacillus acidophilus you're swallowing as a probiotic. Take them at the same moment, and the antibiotic may wipe out a good chunk of those live cultures before they ever do their job.
This is a theoretical interaction based on how these two work, not something proven to cause harm, so don't lose sleep over it. A simple fix helps: space the probiotic at least two hours apart from your ampicillin dose. If you want to be sure of the timing, your pharmacist is happy to help.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ampicillin page
“An antibiotic only works if enough of it survives the trip through your gut, and that is where ampicillin (Principen, Penbritin) meets real trouble with one supplement in particular. Activated charcoal, the single major-rated entry among the 50 on this page, binds drugs in the digestive tract and can sharply cut how much ampicillin you…”

About Lactobacillus Acidophilus
What is Lactobacillus Acidophilus?
- Digestive health and balance
- Diarrhea (including antibiotic-related)
- Vaginal yeast and bacterial infections
- Lactose intolerance
- General immune support
Lactobacillus acidophilus is a 'friendly' bacterium used as a probiotic to support gut and vaginal health. It is generally well tolerated in healthy people, and there is reasonable evidence it may help with certain types of diarrhea, but proof for many other uses is limited. People with weakened immune systems or serious illness should check with a doctor before using it.
About Ampicillin
What Is Ampicillin Used For?
Brand names: Principen, Omnipen-N, Omnipen, Rimacillin, Penbritin
Ampicillin treats bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. It is used for respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections (including typhoid fever and dysentery), bacterial meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain), septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection), and endocarditis (infection of the heart's inner lining).
Ampicillin capsules are specifically indicated for genitourinary tract infections — including gonorrhea — as well as meningitis caused by N. meningitidis. The injectable forms of Ampicillin and Ampicillin Sodium are reserved for moderate to severe infections or for patients who cannot take oral medication.
