Vancomycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Acidophilus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction doesn't hurt your vancomycin at all. It actually works the other way around. Because vancomycin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria in your gut, taking it at the same time as your Lactobacillus acidophilus probiotic may kill off a good chunk of those live, friendly organisms before they can do their job. So you'd still get the full benefit of the vancomycin, but you might be wasting your probiotic.

This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not something proven in studies. A simple fix is to space them out: take your probiotic about two hours apart from your vancomycin dose. If you're using the probiotic for a specific reason, check with your pharmacist or doctor on the best timing.

About Vancomycin

What Is Vancomycin Used For?

Brand names: Vancocin, Vancoled

Vancomycin is used to fight serious bacterial infections caused by certain hard-to-treat bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). When given intravenously (by IV), it treats conditions like septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection), infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and lower respiratory tract infections.

When taken by mouth — as capsules or oral solution (brands include Vancocin and Firvanq) — vancomycin treats Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff) and staphylococcal enterocolitis (a gut infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus). It's important to know that the oral form does not work for bloodstream or other serious infections, and the IV form does not work for C. diff or gut infections — each route has its own specific uses.
