Tobramycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Acidophilus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction works against the probiotic, not against your tobramycin. Tobramycin is an antibiotic, and it kills bacteria, including the friendly Lactobacillus acidophilus in your probiotic. So if you swallow them at the same time, you may simply be wasting the probiotic, since fewer live organisms survive to reach your gut.

The good news is this is a theoretical concern based on how these products work, and it's easy to manage. The usual advice is to space them out by at least two hours. Tobramycin doesn't change because of the probiotic, so your antibiotic still does its job. If you're using a probiotic during treatment, just ask your pharmacist about the best timing for your situation.

Tobramycin Injection is used to treat serious and life-threatening bacterial infections caused by susceptible bacteria. It is approved for adults and children for infections of the blood (septicemia), lungs and airways, brain and spinal cord (meningitis), abdomen, skin, bones, and urinary tract.

Because antibiotic resistance is a growing concern, Tobramycin Injection should only be used when there is a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection. Your care team will use culture and lab results to confirm it is the right choice.
