Ciprofloxacin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Lactobacillus Acidophilus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. The probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus is made up of live, friendly bacteria. So if you swallow them at the same time, the Cipro can wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic bugs before they ever get a chance to help. This doesn't make your Cipro weaker or more dangerous, and it won't change how the antibiotic fights your infection.

The simple fix is timing. Try to space them out by at least two hours so the probiotic has a window to settle in. This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not a safety scare. If you're unsure how to schedule them, your pharmacist can map it out with you.

Ciprofloxacin belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. It's prescribed to treat bacterial infections in many parts of the body — including the urinary tract, skin, lungs, bones, joints, and digestive system. It's also used to protect against or treat anthrax and plague after exposure.

Because ciprofloxacin carries real risks, it's reserved for milder conditions like sinus infections, simple bladder infections, and flare-ups of chronic bronchitis only when there are no safer alternatives available.
