Vancomycin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium lactis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. lactis.
Since B. lactis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. lactis preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: vancomycin is an antibiotic, and your probiotic Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis is made of live bacteria. If you swallow them at the same time, the vancomycin can simply kill off a good chunk of those helpful organisms before they ever get to work. So this interaction goes one direction, it weakens the probiotic, not the antibiotic. Your vancomycin will still do its job treating the intestinal infection.

This is a theoretical concern based on how the two work, not hard clinical proof, so don't be alarmed. A simple fix is spacing them out by at least 2 hours. Vancomycin taken by mouth stays mostly in the gut, so timing really does matter here. Check with your pharmacist if you'd like help building a schedule.

About Vancomycin

What Is Vancomycin Used For?

Brand names: Vancocin, Vancoled

Vancomycin is used to fight serious bacterial infections caused by certain hard-to-treat bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). When given intravenously (by IV), it treats conditions like septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection), infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), skin and skin structure infections, bone infections, and lower respiratory tract infections.

When taken by mouth — as capsules or oral solution (brands include Vancocin and Firvanq) — vancomycin treats Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff) and staphylococcal enterocolitis (a gut infection caused by Staphylococcus aureus). It's important to know that the oral form does not work for bloodstream or other serious infections, and the IV form does not work for C. diff or gut infections — each route has its own specific uses.
