Oritavancin Diphosphate falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium lactis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. lactis.
Since B. lactis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. lactis preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: oritavancin (Orbactiv, Kimyrsa) is an antibiotic, so it kills bacteria. Your probiotic, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, is made of live, helpful bacteria. So when these two cross paths, the antibiotic may simply kill off some of those good bugs before they can do their job. That means the probiotic could work less well, not that the antibiotic becomes dangerous.

One detail worth noting: oritavancin is given as a single intravenous infusion at the clinic, not a daily pill, so the timing overlap is short. This concern is mostly theoretical, based on how these products work rather than hard studies. If you want the probiotic to count, just take it a couple hours apart and ask your pharmacist if you're unsure.

What Is Oritavancin Injection Used For?

Brand names: Orbactiv, Kimyrsa

Oritavancin injection — available as Orbactiv and Kimyrsa — is used to treat acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) in adults. These are serious skin infections caused by susceptible gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA), several Streptococcus species, and vancomycin-susceptible Enterococcus faecalis.

This antibiotic should only be used when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected. Using it unnecessarily can contribute to antibiotic resistance.
