ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Ampicillin
Ampicillin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bacillus Subtilis interacts with.
Since B. subtilis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. subtilis preparations by at least 2 hours.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the key thing to know: this interaction works against your probiotic, not against your antibiotic. Ampicillin is a penicillin, and its whole job is to kill bacteria. Bacillus subtilis is a live, friendly bacterium. So if you swallow them at the same time, the ampicillin can wipe out a good chunk of those probiotic organisms before they ever get to work. Your ampicillin will still treat your infection just fine.
This is a theoretical concern based on how the two behave, rated moderate, so don't be alarmed. A simple fix helps: space them out by at least 2 hours. If you want to keep taking the probiotic during your antibiotic course, check with your pharmacist on the best timing.

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

This page covers Bacillus Subtilis only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Ampicillin page lists 50 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.
The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Bacillus Coagulans (moderate), Bifidobacterium Animalis Subsp. Lactis (moderate), Bifidobacterium Bifidum (moderate) and Bifidobacterium Breve (moderate).
By severity: 1 major · 39 moderate · 10 minor.
From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ampicillin page
“An antibiotic only works if enough of it survives the trip through your gut, and that is where ampicillin (Principen, Penbritin) meets real trouble with one supplement in particular. Activated charcoal, the single major-rated entry among the 50 on this page, binds drugs in the digestive tract and can sharply cut how much ampicillin you…”

About Bacillus Subtilis
What is Bacillus Subtilis?
- Digestive health and bloating
- Diarrhea support
- Immune support
- Gut microbiome balance
Bacillus subtilis is a spore-forming probiotic bacterium found in soil and some fermented foods, and it is used mainly to support gut health and digestion. Early research is promising for certain digestive and immune uses, but evidence is still limited and not strong enough to make firm claims. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a weak immune system.
About Ampicillin
What Is Ampicillin Used For?
Brand names: Principen, Omnipen-N, Omnipen, Rimacillin, Penbritin
Ampicillin treats bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. It is used for respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections (including typhoid fever and dysentery), bacterial meningitis (infection of the lining around the brain), septicemia (a serious bloodstream infection), and endocarditis (infection of the heart's inner lining).
Ampicillin capsules are specifically indicated for genitourinary tract infections — including gonorrhea — as well as meningitis caused by N. meningitidis. The injectable forms of Ampicillin and Ampicillin Sodium are reserved for moderate to severe infections or for patients who cannot take oral medication.
