Bacillus Subtilis and Minocycline Hydrochloride

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Minocycline Hydrochloride

Minocycline Hydrochloride falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bacillus Subtilis interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bacillus subtilis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. subtilis.
Since B. subtilis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. subtilis preparations by at least 2 hours.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: minocycline is an antibiotic, and it doesn't know the difference between bad bacteria and the friendly bacteria in your Bacillus subtilis probiotic. Since these supplements contain live organisms, taking them at the same time as minocycline can kill off a good chunk of the probiotic, so you get less benefit from it. This goes one direction only, it's the probiotic that loses its punch, not your antibiotic. Minocycline will still work just fine against your infection.

The easy fix is timing. Try to space them out by at least 2 hours. This concern is based on how these products work rather than hard studies, so it's not dangerous, just a matter of getting your money's worth. Check with your pharmacist if you're unsure about scheduling.

About Bacillus Subtilis

What is Bacillus Subtilis?

  • Digestive health and bloating
  • Diarrhea support
  • Immune support
  • Gut microbiome balance

Bacillus subtilis is a spore-forming probiotic bacterium found in soil and some fermented foods, and it is used mainly to support gut health and digestion. Early research is promising for certain digestive and immune uses, but evidence is still limited and not strong enough to make firm claims. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have a weak immune system.

About Minocycline

What Is Minocycline Used For?

Brand names: Ximino, Minolira

Minocycline is mainly used for infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Oral capsules and tablets, and Minocin intravenous (IV), are labeled for many infections. These include rickettsial infections such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Mycoplasma pneumoniae respiratory infections, chlamydia-related infections, plague, tularemia, cholera and brucellosis (with streptomycin). Some gram-negative bacterial infections are included when lab testing shows the bacteria respond.

Other minocycline products are not for infections at all. Extended-release tablets (including Minolira) treat inflammatory acne lesions in patients 12 and older. Amzeeq foam treats inflammatory acne in patients 9 and older. Zilxi foam and Emrosi capsules treat inflammatory rosacea lesions in adults. Arestin is placed in gum pockets by a dental professional for adult periodontitis.
