Penicillin V Potassium falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bacillus Subtilis interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bacillus subtilis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. subtilis.
Since B. subtilis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. subtilis preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: Penicillin V kills bacteria, and Bacillus subtilis IS bacteria. Since this probiotic contains live, active organisms, taking your antibiotic at the same time can wipe out a good chunk of those helpful bugs before they get to do their job. This doesn't make your penicillin work any worse, and it won't cause extra side effects. It mainly means you may not get the full benefit from the probiotic.

The simple fix is timing. Try to space the two apart by at least 2 hours. This is a theoretical concern based on how antibiotics work, not something proven in big studies, so don't worry too much. If you're using B. subtilis for a reason, just check with your pharmacist on the best schedule.

What Is Penicillin V Potassium Used For?

Brand names: V-Cillin K, Veetids, Pen VK, Beepen-VK, Ledercillin, Pen-Vee K

Penicillin V Potassium treats mild to moderately severe bacterial infections caused by penicillin-sensitive bacteria. These include streptococcal infections (such as strep throat and scarlet fever), pneumococcal respiratory infections, mild staphylococcal skin and soft-tissue infections, and fusospirochetosis (Vincent's gingivitis and pharyngitis — a mouth and throat infection).

It is also used as a preventive (prophylactic) therapy: on an ongoing basis to prevent rheumatic fever and chorea from coming back, and — as suggested by the American Heart Association and American Dental Association — to help guard against bacterial endocarditis (infection of the heart valves) in certain patients with heart conditions undergoing dental or upper respiratory tract procedures. It should not be used this way in patients at particularly high risk, such as those with prosthetic heart valves.
