What’s inside
Full disclosure
Hawaii Pharm Agar Agar is a one-ingredient supplement: Agar Agar Extract in dry, powdered form. The inactive ingredients are alcohol, water, and glycerin.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for agar agar's effectiveness in diabetes, obesity, and neonatal jaundice is insufficient and reliable. We don't have enough data to know whether it works for any of these uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Agar agar is generally well tolerated as a food. The main caution is at supplement doses: take it with plenty of water to avoid blockage.
A thorough safety evaluation of concentrated supplement doses hasn't been done. Rarely, very high-fiber foods like agar have caused phytobezoars (fiber clumps in the gut) and esophageal or bowel obstruction, especially without enough fluid intake.
There isn't enough safety data on file regarding agar agar and pregnancy or lactation.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take any oral medications, double-check them with the interaction tool below. Agar may reduce how well your body absorbs drugs by the mouth, though the effect is minor and depends on dosing and timing.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
Agar agar is a thickening agent that may work as a bulk laxative, but evidence for diabetes or weight loss is lacking. If you take oral medications, space them several hours apart from this product and drink plenty of water with it.
Talk to your pharmacist before starting, especially if you have a history of bowel obstruction or take medications that need good absorption.

Agar Agar by Hawaii Pharm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hawaii Pharm's Agar Agar Extract can interact with oral medications.
Agar forms a thick gel in your stomach and intestines that may reduce how well your body absorbs oral drugs — the same way it can impair absorption of nutrients from food. Animal studies show that high amounts of agar (5% to 10% of diet) noticeably cut mineral absorption; theoretically, this extends to medications taken by mouth.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The interaction is classified as Minor in severity. Because agar's effect is physical rather than chemical — it thickens and slows movement through your digestive tract — it could potentially affect a broad range of oral medications, though the impact depends on how much agar you take and how sensitive a particular drug is to absorption changes.
Always take this supplement with plenty of water and space your medications and this product several hours apart if you can. Check your specific medications with the interaction checker on this page before starting.

Agar Agar Extract, Dry, Powder
Oral Drugs
Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.
