Abemaciclib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the simple version: Agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. The concern is that this gel could grab onto an oral pill like Verzenio (abemaciclib) and slow or reduce how much your body absorbs. If less of your medicine gets in, it may not work as well against your breast cancer, which obviously matters a lot with a treatment like this.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's theoretical, based mostly on animal studies looking at minerals, not on real people taking abemaciclib. Small food amounts of agar are unlikely to be a problem. If you're using concentrated agar supplements, a smart move is to separate them from your dose by a few hours and check with your pharmacist or oncologist first.

What Is Abemaciclib Used For?

Brand name: Verzenio

Verzenio (abemaciclib) is used to treat adults with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. For early breast cancer at high risk of returning, Verzenio is taken alongside endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor) after surgery to help prevent recurrence.

For advanced or metastatic breast cancer, Verzenio can be used in three ways: combined with an aromatase inhibitor as a first hormonal treatment; combined with fulvestrant after the cancer has progressed on prior hormone therapy; or on its own after both hormone therapy and prior chemotherapy have stopped working.
