AHCC Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Source Naturals
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking AHCC against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy
AHCC is a dietary supplement by Source Naturals with 5 active ingredients. Its ingredients are commonly taken for immune support, general wellness and nutrition, cholesterol and heart health.Based on those ingredients, 312 medications have a known interaction with it, the most serious rated moderate. HelloPharmacist Scorecard of AHCC by Source Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This powder contains 5 ingredients, including a proprietary blend featuring shiitake mycelia extract — the active component the product is built around. The other ingredients are microcrystalline cellulose, dextrin, carnauba wax, and alpha-cyclodextrin, which function as binders, fillers, and flow agents to create the powder form.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for shiitake extract is mixed and modest. It's rated possibly ineffective for dental plaque.
For most other uses — including cancer support, chemotherapy-induced nausea, and chemotherapy-related anemia — we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate it one way or the other. If cancer or chemotherapy side effects are why you're considering this, talk with your doctor or oncologist about what the research actually shows before you add it.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Shiitake is generally well tolerated when cooked and eaten as food. As a concentrated supplement, though, the safety data are thinner, and caution is advised.
The most common side effects when taken orally are abdominal discomfort, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Raw shiitake can cause shiitake dermatitis — a distinctive skin eruption — and rarely, if pieces aren't chewed well, intestinal blockage.
People who handle raw shiitake extensively can develop allergic contact dermatitis or, in severe cases, lung inflammation from spore inhalation. The product facts don't give us enough information to assess safety in pregnancy or while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice on those.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you're on any immunosuppressant medications — drugs used after organ transplants or for certain immune conditions. Also flag any medications metabolized by CYP2D6 (your pharmacist can tell you if yours are on that list).
Both are documented moderate-severity interactions with shiitake extract.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
AHCC might be worth considering if you're exploring immune-support options and have no immunosuppressant medications. If you take any drugs to suppress your immune system, or anything that your liver processes via the CYP2D6 pathway, check with your pharmacist first.
The evidence for what it actually does is sparse, so set realistic expectations.

Formula
AHCC is a proprietary compound produced by cultivation of shiitake mushroom mycelia, grown in rice bran extract. Considered a superfood supplement in Japan, AHCC has been researched extensively for its immune enhancement properties. Preliminary research indicates that AHCC may significantly increase Natural Killer (NK) Cell activity. There is also evidence to suggest that AHCC may increase macrophage activity, enhance cytokine production, and support the healthy functioning of the liver as well as act as an antioxidant.

AHCC by Source Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
AHCC by Source Naturals contains shiitake mycelia extract, which has documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is immunosuppressants — if you're taking drugs to suppress your immune system (like those after an organ transplant), shiitake may theoretically work against them, since the extract appears to stimulate immune function.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Shiitake extract may also affect how your body processes certain medications metabolized by the CYP2D6 enzyme pathway — a moderate-severity interaction documented only in lab studies so far, not confirmed in humans yet.
We couldn't check three other ingredients in this product: microcrystalline cellulose, dextrin, and alpha-cyclodextrin — we hold no interaction data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 308 individual medications.
If you're on an immunosuppressant or any other prescription medication, run your exact drugs through the checker on this page before you start.
