HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Alpha GPC 300 mg by NOW
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: alpha-GPC (also called L-alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine), a compound that plays a role in how your brain cells communicate and maintain their structure. The capsule also contains several inactive ingredients — cellulose, silica, stearic acid, and magnesium stearate — which are fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
For Alzheimer disease, alpha-GPC is rated possibly effective, meaning there's some evidence it may help but more research is needed to be certain. For brain tumors, cognitive function, vascular dementia, and stroke, the evidence isn't established well enough in our data to rate it one way or the other.
If you're considering it for any of these conditions, that's a conversation to have with your doctor.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Alpha-GPC is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety hasn't been fully established. Rarely, it's been linked to dizziness, headache, insomnia, excitation, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, and vomiting.
More concerning, alpha-GPC used for at least 2 months has been rarely associated with an elevated stroke risk compared with non-users or those who used it for less than 2 months. We don't have enough safety data for pregnancy or breastfeeding — talk with your doctor before using it if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you're taking scopolamine (Transderm Scop), a motion sickness patch, double-check with your pharmacist before adding alpha-GPC — it might reduce how well the patch works to prevent nausea. No other Major or Moderate interactions are documented for the ingredients we could check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
Alpha-GPC might be worth considering if you're exploring options for Alzheimer disease, but the evidence for other uses isn't clear yet. If you're on a scopolamine patch or any prescription medication, check with your pharmacist first.
Long-term safety and stroke risk over 2+ months of use are questions to discuss with your doctor.

Alpha GPC is a natural physiological precursor to acetyl-choline, a neurotransmitter that is involved in memory and other cognitive functions.* Alpha GPC is more bioavailable than other forms of choline and is known to cross the blood-brain barrier. In the brain and other neural tissues, Alpha GPC becomes a constituent of cell membranes.* Clinical studies have demonstrated that supplementation with Alpha GPC can support the brain’s synthesis of acetyl-choline.* In this way, it helps to promote normal cognitive function and mental acuity.*

Alpha GPC 300 mg by NOW Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Alpha GPC 300 mg by NOW has one documented interaction we need to flag.
Alpha GPC might decrease how well scopolamine (Transderm Scop, the motion sickness patch) works. A small study showed that alpha-GPC can partially counteract the attention and memory problems scopolamine causes, but we don't yet know whether it would weaken the anti-nausea benefits of the patch itself — that's the concern.

Although this is the only interaction we have monograph data for, it's rated Minor. Altogether, these interactions span 16 individual medications.

Scopolamine (Transderm Scop)
Theoretically, alpha-GPC might decrease the effects of scopolamine.
A small clinical study shows that alpha-GPC can partially counteract the attention and memory impairment effects caused by scopolamine given intramuscularly. Whether alpha-GPC can decrease the beneficial anti-motion sickness effects of the scopolamine patch (Transderm Scop) is unclear.
