What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product has 5 active ingredients. The main components are three omega-3 fatty acids — eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and other fatty acids — which are the omega-3s people take krill oil for.
It also contains astaxanthin, a red pigment from krill with antioxidant properties, and phospholipids, which are fat-like compounds that help your body absorb the other ingredients. The capsule itself is made from gelatin and glycerin.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold for astaxanthin doesn't support a firm rating for any condition. We have insufficient reliable evidence for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
We don't have effectiveness data on file for the omega-3 fatty acids in this product.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported orally are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools.
At standard doses (6 mg daily), a small number of trial participants experienced increased bowel movements and red fecal color; at higher doses (40 mg daily), severe stomach pain has been reported in a small number of people. There isn't enough safety data to know whether astaxanthin is safe in pregnancy, so the data advises against it during pregnancy.
The same applies to breastfeeding — talk with your pharmacist or doctor if you're pregnant or nursing and want to use this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check whether you're on any medications broken down by the liver enzymes CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 — astaxanthin may theoretically lower their levels. These include some blood pressure medications, certain immunosuppressants, and some cholesterol drugs.
Run your exact medications through the checker on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This krill oil supplement is primarily a source of omega-3 fatty acids, with added astaxanthin. If you take medications processed through your liver — especially certain blood pressure drugs, immunosuppressants, or statins — check with your pharmacist before starting.
Pregnant and breastfeeding individuals should talk to their doctor first because safety data are limited.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Antarctic Krill Oil 2000 mg by Approved Science contains one ingredient we have interaction data for: astaxanthin.
Astaxanthin may theoretically decrease how your body processes certain medications through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 (cytochrome P450 3A4). This is a Moderate-severity interaction based on lab research, though it hasn't been documented in people yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also theoretically interacts with drugs metabolized by another liver enzyme, CYP2B6 (cytochrome P450 2B6), with the same Moderate severity and mechanism.
We couldn't check the three other active ingredients — eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and other fatty acids — because we hold no interaction data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 661 individual medications.
