Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: aronia melanocarpa, also called chokeberry. It's a 20:1 concentrated extract, meaning the manufacturer has concentrated the plant material to make it more potent.

There are no inactive ingredients listed.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

We hold no graded evidence for this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports health immune response.
  • We looked for evidence on: immune function, antioxidant support, inflammation.
  • Our graded evidence for these ingredients doesn't cover that particular purpose.

The evidence for chokeberry in this concentrated form is thin. For cardiovascular disease, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective — studies haven't shown the benefits many people hope for.

For age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, athletic performance, and cancer prevention, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works or doesn't. The data we hold on file doesn't establish that this product is effective for any of these uses.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chokeberry is generally well tolerated when eaten as food, but this is a concentrated supplement — and concentrated supplements haven't been well studied for safety. The most common side effects are digestive: constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting.

In small clinical studies, roughly 14 to 53 percent of people drinking chokeberry juice reported one or more of these issues, depending on the dose and how long they took it. Because supplement safety data for concentrated forms like this is limited, use caution.

For breastfeeding, there's no safety information on file for this product. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're nursing, so they can advise you based on your individual situation.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Chokeberry.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 812 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you're on a blood thinner or antiplatelet drug (like warfarin or aspirin), any diabetes medication, or trabectedin (Yondelis). Chokeberry also inhibits a liver enzyme that clears hundreds of other drugs, so run your full medication list through the checker on this page.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Chokeberry is a real plant with real interactions — especially if you're on a blood thinner, diabetes medication, or taking trabectedin. If you take any prescription medications, check them against this product before you start.

Most people who take it experience digestive upset. If you're curious about heart or brain health, talk with your pharmacist first — the evidence for this one isn't strong.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical and in vitro research suggests that chokeberry extract can temporarily inhibit platelet aggregation and decrease clot formation.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that chokeberry decreases levels of blood glucose in some patients with diabetes. However, other clinical research suggests that chokeberry has no significant effect on blood glucose levels.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that chokeberry inhibits CYP3A4. In humans, there is one case report of a drug interaction with trabectedin, a CYP3A4 substrate, which is hypothesized to have been caused by chokeberry inhibition of CYP3A4.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Trabectedin (Yondelis)

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the effects and adverse effects of trabectedin.
In one case report, a patient drinking chokeberry juice developed rhabdomyolysis induced by trabectedin, a cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) substrate. It is possible that inhibition of CYP3A4 by chokeberry juice might have inhibited the metabolism of trabectedin and increased trabectedin levels in this patient.

Aronia 20:1 Concentrated Extract by Samsara Herbs: Common Questions

Does Aronia 20:1 Concentrated Extract by Samsara Herbs interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Aronia 20:1 Concentrated Extract has a known interaction with 811 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Aronia 20:1 Concentrated Extract contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What exactly is aronia melanocarpa?
It's chokeberry, a dark berry-producing shrub. This product is a 20:1 concentrated extract, which means it's been processed to pack more of the plant's compounds into a smaller dose than you'd get eating fresh berries.
What side effects does chokeberry cause?
The most common ones are stomach and digestive issues: constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. In clinical studies, somewhere between 14 and 53 percent of people reported at least one of these, depending on the dose.
Does chokeberry actually help your heart or brain?
For heart disease, the data suggests it's probably not effective. For brain health and age-related eye disease, we don't have enough reliable evidence either way — the science just isn't there yet.
Is it safe to take while breastfeeding?
We don't have safety information on file for this product while breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it — they can advise you based on your situation.
Why does chokeberry interact with so many drugs?
Chokeberry inhibits an enzyme in your liver called CYP3A4 that breaks down hundreds of different medications. When that enzyme is slowed down, drugs can build up in your bloodstream and become stronger or cause more side effects.
