Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: aronia melanocarpa, commonly called chokeberry. It's a berry-based powder with no other active ingredients listed.

Chokeberry is marketed for its antioxidant content and has been studied for effects on heart health, brain aging, eye health, athletic performance, and cancer prevention, though the strength of evidence varies widely across these uses.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

We hold no graded evidence for this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports healthy immune response.
  • We looked for evidence on: immune function, antioxidant support, inflammation.
  • Our graded evidence for these ingredients doesn't cover that particular purpose.

The evidence for chokeberry's benefits is limited. For cardiovascular disease, the data suggests it's possibly ineffective.

For age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, athletic performance, and cancer prevention, there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to say whether it works or not.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Chokeberry is generally well tolerated when eaten as food, but safety data for concentrated supplements like this powder is sparse. The most common side effects reported orally are constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting.

In two small studies, 14–53% of people drinking chokeberry juice daily experienced gastrointestinal problems including diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, stomachache, or vomiting. We don't hold safety information for lactation.

  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs; diabetes medications.
  • For scale: 812 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Double-check before using if you take trabectedin (a cancer drug), blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin or aspirin, diabetes medications, or any drug metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes — all are Moderate-severity interactions. Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Clinical and in vitro research suggests that chokeberry extract can temporarily inhibit platelet aggregation and decrease clot formation.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that chokeberry decreases levels of blood glucose in some patients with diabetes. However, other clinical research suggests that chokeberry has no significant effect on blood glucose levels.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that chokeberry inhibits CYP3A4. In humans, there is one case report of a drug interaction with trabectedin, a CYP3A4 substrate, which is hypothesized to have been caused by chokeberry inhibition of CYP3A4.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Trabectedin (Yondelis)

Theoretically, chokeberry might increase the effects and adverse effects of trabectedin.
In one case report, a patient drinking chokeberry juice developed rhabdomyolysis induced by trabectedin, a cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) substrate. It is possible that inhibition of CYP3A4 by chokeberry juice might have inhibited the metabolism of trabectedin and increased trabectedin levels in this patient.

Aronia by Samsara Herbs: Common Questions

Does Aronia by Samsara Herbs interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Aronia has a known interaction with 811 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Aronia contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What's aronia, and why is it in supplements?
Aronia, or chokeberry, is a berry that's been studied for antioxidants and potential benefits to heart and brain health. It's sold as a concentrated powder because the berry itself is tart and not typically eaten fresh.
Can I take this if I'm on blood thinners?
Not without checking with your pharmacist first. Chokeberry may thin your blood further and increase bleeding risk — a Moderate-severity interaction. Your doctor or pharmacist needs to know you're considering it.
What are the most likely side effects?
Digestive upset is most common: constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. In small studies, 14–53% of people drinking chokeberry juice daily reported these effects, depending on the dose and duration.
Does this actually work for heart health or brain function?
For heart disease, the data suggests it's likely ineffective. For brain aging, macular degeneration, athletic performance, and cancer, there isn't enough reliable evidence in our data to say either way.
Is this safe to take long-term?
Chokeberry is well tolerated as food, but safety data for concentrated supplements like this powder hasn't been thoroughly studied. Use caution with regular or long-term use, and talk with your pharmacist about your specific situation.
