What’s inside
Full disclosure
Ashitaba by Samsara Herbs contains one active ingredient: ashitaba, a leafy plant used in traditional herbal practice. There are no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we have doesn't yet support using ashitaba for alcohol-related liver disease — the data is simply insufficient to say whether it works or doesn't. If you're considering this supplement for that reason, talk it over with your doctor about what's actually proven to help.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Ashitaba is likely safe when used as a food. As a concentrated supplement, though, its safety hasn't been well studied, so we're cautious about its long-term use.
The safety data during pregnancy and breastfeeding is too thin to recommend it — there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take any medications that are processed by the enzyme CYP1A2 — including certain pain relievers, heart medications, and blood pressure drugs — check your specific medications with the search tool before starting ashitaba. The interaction is Moderate in severity and hasn't been studied in people yet, so caution is warranted.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Ashitaba is a traditional plant supplement with one active ingredient, but the evidence for it treating liver disease isn't established. The main concern is a potential interaction with medications your liver processes — affecting a large number of common drugs.
Before you start, check your medications with the search tool on this page and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist.

HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ashitaba by Samsara Herbs may interact with medications processed by an enzyme called CYP1A2.
In lab studies, ashitaba extract slows how your body clears drugs that depend on this enzyme, which could raise the levels of those medications and increase the risk of side effects. However, this interaction hasn't been reported in actual people yet.
We simply don't have the human data to say how likely it is or how serious it would be in real life.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The medications affected by CYP1A2 are fairly common — they span a range of drug types including certain pain relievers, some heart and blood pressure medications, and others. Altogether, these interactions span 186 individual medications.
Until more is known about how ashitaba behaves in the body, use it with caution if you take any medication processed this way.
You'll want to check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before you start.

Ashitaba
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
In vitro research shows that ashitaba extract inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2. Theoretically, concomitant use of ashitaba with CYP1A2 substrates might decrease the clearance of these substrates and increase the risk for adverse effects. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution.
