What’s inside
Full disclosure
This softgel contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin 10 mg, a carotenoid compound. The inactive ingredients are sunflower seed oil, gelatin, vegetable glycerin, and naturally occurring carotenoids.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for astaxanthin's benefits isn't established in our data. We hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for age-related cognitive decline, age-related macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, and carpal tunnel syndrome — the conditions we have monograph data for.
If you're considering it for another reason, talk with your pharmacist about what the current research shows.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, but long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools.
In trials, a 6 mg daily dose caused a small number of cases of increased bowel movements and red fecal color, while a much higher 40 mg daily dose caused severe stomach or abdominal pain in two patients. There isn't enough safety data to know whether it's safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so the data advises against use in both — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check whether you take any drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes — astaxanthin may lower their blood levels. These are Moderate-severity interactions that haven't been confirmed in humans but are theoretically possible based on lab work.
Your pharmacist can run your exact medications through the checker on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astaxanthin is a carotenoid supplement with limited long-term safety evidence and unproven benefits for the conditions we've reviewed. If you take medications your liver processes, check them against this product's known interactions before starting.

Astaxanthin 10 mg by Solgar Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Solgar's Astaxanthin 10 mg contains one active ingredient — astaxanthin — which interacts with medications in two important ways.
The most serious concern is with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 (a liver enzyme); astaxanthin may speed up how your liver clears these medications, potentially lowering their blood levels and reducing how well they work. This is a Moderate-severity interaction based on lab findings, though it hasn't been observed in actual patients yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin also theoretically affects drugs metabolized by CYP2B6, another liver enzyme, in the same way — it may decrease their levels. This is also a Moderate-severity interaction not yet reported in humans.
Although these interactions are theoretical at this point, if you take any prescription medication that your liver processes, check your exact drugs using the tool on this page before starting astaxanthin. Altogether, these interactions span 661 individual medications.
