HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Astaxanthin 2 mg by Source Naturals
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astaxanthin 2 mg per tablet, a pigment extracted from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid — a type of natural red compound — that your body may use as an antioxidant.
The tablet also contains inactive ingredients (fillers and binders): microcrystalline cellulose, stearic acid, modified cellulose gum, and magnesium stearate.
Does it work?
No specific claim
The evidence for astaxanthin's effectiveness is not yet established in our data. We don't have reliable evidence to rate it for age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration (AMD), aging skin, Alzheimer disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome.
This doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the research so far isn't strong enough for us to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astaxanthin is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported orally are abdominal pain, diarrhea, and red-colored stools — the red color comes from the astaxanthin itself and isn't harmful.
At the 2 mg dose in this product, serious side effects are unlikely, though higher doses (40 mg daily) have caused severe stomach pain in a small number of people. The safety data advises against using astaxanthin during pregnancy or while breastfeeding because there isn't enough information to know whether it's safe for your baby.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist about any medications you're on that are metabolized by CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 enzymes — this includes many heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, and psychiatric medications. Astaxanthin may theoretically lower their blood levels and reduce how well they work.
Use the medication checker on this page with your specific drugs to be sure.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula marketed for general wellness rather than one specific gradeable purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're interested in trying astaxanthin for general antioxidant support, this low-dose tablet is generally well tolerated. That said, check your medications with the tool on this page first — it may affect how your body processes a large number of drugs.
If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or unsure whether it's right for you, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.

Antioxidant carotenoid
Astaxanthin, a member of the carotenoid family, is a powerful antioxidant. In vitro research demonstrates that astaxanthin may be up to 4 times stronger than other carotenoids such as lutein, cryptoxanthin, and beta-carotene, and may be ip to 85 times stronger than alpha-tocopherol. Astaxanthin possesses both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties, and may provide health benefits throughout the body by modulating the activity of free-radicals.

Astaxanthin 2 mg by Source Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Source Naturals Astaxanthin 2 mg contains astaxanthin, which may interact with certain medications.
The main concern is with drugs metabolized by your liver's CYP3A4 enzyme — a large group that includes many common medications. Astaxanthin may speed up how your liver processes these drugs, potentially lowering their blood levels and reducing their effectiveness.
This effect hasn't been seen in humans yet, but laboratory research suggests it's theoretically possible.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
There's also a similar Moderate concern with drugs metabolized by the CYP2B6 enzyme. Astaxanthin may increase the rate your liver clears these medications as well, which could make them less effective.
Again, this is based on lab findings and hasn't been reported in actual patients.
Altogether, these interactions span 672 individual medications. Because the astaxanthin content here is low (2 mg), the practical risk may be smaller than the theoretical one — but you'll want to check your exact medications with the tool on this page before starting, especially if you take anything for your heart, blood pressure, cholesterol, or mental health.
