What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: astragalus, a dried root extract at 500 mg per capsule. The capsule also contains three inactive ingredients — rice flour, gelatin, and silicon dioxide — which serve as filler and binder.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence we hold on astragalus doesn't clearly support its use for the conditions listed in our data, including hay fever, irregular periods, aplastic anemia, angina, asthma, and beta-thalassemia. For all of these, we've rated the evidence as insufficient.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the human research isn't solid enough yet to make a confident call.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Astragalus is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth short-term in healthy adults, though human safety data is limited. Some people have reported dizziness or, rarely, temporary palpitations with intravenous forms, though these effects may not have been caused by astragalus itself.
The safety data advises against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — there isn't enough reliable information to know it's safe in those situations.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take immunosuppressive drugs (Moderate risk), lithium (Moderate risk), cyclophosphamide (Moderate risk), or diabetes medications (Moderate risk). These interactions are documented in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Astragalus is a single-ingredient supplement used traditionally to support immunity, though the evidence for specific benefits isn't solid yet. If you take immunosuppressants, lithium, cyclophosphamide, or diabetes medications, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting — the interactions are theoretical but worth ruling out.
Talk it over with your healthcare provider to see if it makes sense for you.

Astragalus 500 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Astragalus 500 mg by The Vitamin Shoppe has documented interactions with several medication types.
The most serious concern is with immunosuppressive drugs — astragalus appears to stimulate immune function, which could theoretically reduce how well these medications work. That's a Moderate-severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You'll also want to flag this if you take lithium for mood disorders. Animal research suggests astragalus has mild diuretic properties, which might reduce how much lithium your body clears, raising its levels and side effects — also Moderate severity.
Cyclophosphamide (a chemotherapy drug) is another one to watch: evidence is mixed on whether astragalus interferes with it, but the concern is Moderate. If you take diabetes medications, astragalus might lower your blood sugar further, increasing the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) — Moderate severity as well.
Altogether, these interactions span 208 individual medications. Use the medication checker on this page to see if any of your prescriptions are affected, and talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Clinical research in humans shows that astragalus might have hypoglycemic effects. Theoretically, taking astragalus, especially in combination with other hypoglycemic agents, might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Cyclophosphamide
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with cyclophosphamide therapy.
Evidence regarding the effect of astragalus on immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide is conflicting. Some animal research suggests that astragalus reverses cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression. However, other animal research shows no effect.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Astragalus seems to stimulate immune function. Theoretically, taking astragalus might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy.
Lithium
Theoretically, astragalus might increase levels and adverse effects of lithium.
Animal research suggests that astragalus has diuretic properties. Theoretically, due to this diuretic effect, astragalus might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
