Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing. Deflazacort is a corticosteroid that works partly by calming down an overactive immune system. Astragalus, on the other hand, is often taken to rev up immune function. So in theory, the two could work against each other, and astragalus might blunt some of the benefit you're getting from deflazacort.

I'll be honest with you though, this concern comes from lab and animal research, not real human studies, so we don't truly know how much it matters day to day. Still, since deflazacort is treating a serious condition like Duchenne muscular dystrophy, it's worth a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist before adding astragalus rather than guessing.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
