Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • “Bacopa, Powder” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (1,200 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

This supplement contains one active ingredient: bacopa herb extract at 1200 mg per capsule. Bacopa is a plant used in traditional medicine, believed to support brain function and memory.

The remaining ingredients — microcrystalline cellulose, modified cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide — are inactive fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not established

The graded evidence we hold for these ingredients covers different conditions than the ones this product is marketed for, so there's no established rating for its stated use — see Bacopa's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports healthy brain function.
  • We looked for evidence on: Cognitive function, Cognitive impairment, Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, memory — and 2 related terms.
  • The closest evidence on file: Bacopa is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Alzheimer disease (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Bacopa is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Cognitive function, Cognitive impairment, Parkinson disease.

The evidence for bacopa isn't established yet. The data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for Alzheimer disease, sexual dysfunction, ADHD, back pain, cognitive function, or cognitive impairment.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means studies so far haven't given us a clear answer. If you're considering it for one of these purposes, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current research actually supports.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Bacopa is generally well tolerated, though quality and long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: abdominal cramps, diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea, and headache.

Some people report drowsiness, insomnia, or vivid dreams. Gastrointestinal upset rates range from 12 to 30% in studies.

Because there isn't enough safety information, bacopa should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor if you're in either situation and interested in trying it.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Bacopa.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 931 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before taking this product, check whether you use any CYP3A4, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, or CYP1A2 substrates (a pharmacist can tell you if your drugs fall into these groups), anticholinergic drugs, cholinergic drugs, cevimeline (Evoxac), or thyroid hormone. These interactions range from moderate to minor severity, and the research on their real-world impact is still unclear — but it's important to run your medication list through the checker on this page.

Bacopa, Powder8 drug types · 930 drugs

Anticholinergic Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use might decrease the effectiveness of both agents.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cevimeline (Evoxac)

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the effects and adverse effects of cevimeline.
In one case, a 58-year-old female taking cevimeline long-term for Sjogren syndrome experienced hyperhidrosis, malaise, nausea, and tachycardia shortly after taking a single dose of bacopa. Symptoms resolved after two days. Cevimeline is metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 and CYP3A4, and researchers theorize that bacopa may have inhibited these isoenzymes. However, it is unclear if bacopa causes clinically significant inhibition of either CYP2D6 or CYP3A4.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cholinergic Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use of bacopa with other cholinergic drugs might have additive effects.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels. Theoretically, this could result in additive cholinergic effects when used with cholinergic drugs.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C19 enzymes. It is not known whether this is clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
Research on the effect of bacopa extracts on CYP2C9 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C9, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Thyroid Hormone

Theoretically, bacopa might have additive effects when used with thyroid hormone.
Animal research suggests that bacopa increases thyroxine (T4) levels in mice by about 40%.

Bacopa 1200 mg by Futurebiotics: Common Questions

Does Bacopa 1200 mg by Futurebiotics interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Bacopa 1200 mg has a known interaction with 930 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Bacopa 1200 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What side effects should I expect?
Most people tolerate bacopa well, but the most common side effects are digestive: stomach cramps, diarrhea, nausea, and dry mouth. Some people also report headache, drowsiness, insomnia, or vivid dreams. Gastrointestinal upset shows up in roughly 12 to 30% of people in studies. If you experience any of these, dial back the dose or stop and talk with your pharmacist.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No — there isn't enough safety information, so bacopa should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. If you're in either situation and want to try a memory or cognitive supplement, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what's known to be safer.
Does bacopa actually work for memory and focus?
The evidence we hold is insufficient to say for sure. Bacopa has been studied for Alzheimer disease, ADHD, cognitive function, and other brain-related concerns, but the data so far hasn't given us a clear answer about how well it works. Your pharmacist can point you to the current research if you want to dig deeper.
Why does this product interact with so many medications?
Bacopa appears to affect several enzyme systems in your liver that break down drugs — think of it like a traffic controller slowing down how fast certain medications move through your system. That can increase drug levels and side effects. The research is mixed about whether the effect is strong enough to matter in real life, but it's worth checking with your pharmacist before you combine it with any prescription.
Is bacopa safe to take long-term?
Bacopa is generally well tolerated short-term, but quality and long-term safety data are limited. If you're thinking about taking it regularly for months or years, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about monitoring and whether it's right for your situation.
